Thanks for taking a peek "behind the curtain" of my work in the theatre and my views about the performing arts, plays, playwrights, education, life . . .
As Bees In Honey Drown - Master's Thesis Production at Kansas State University
A Streetcar Named Desire
Here are photos from the production I directed recently at City Theatre of Independence. You can click on the photo for a larger view. Then for a full screen view click on the tab to the upper left of the photos on the Picasa page. The tech director and crew did a fantastic job of building the two-story set I designed.
"Send Off," a 10-minute play by Justin Martinez
Here is a short play I directed at The Barn Players in Kansas City for their new play festival. It's an intriguing look at a father and son on the evening of the son's college graduation. Watch the video here or click on "You Tube" in the lower right hand corner for a larger screen. (You may need to press pause for a minute, until enough has downloaded to play smoothly. ) I'm glad we were able to record the excellent stage work done by Tom Sutton, Jordan Foote, and Mary McFarlane.
What Goes on "Behind the Scenes" in the Theatre?
I hope you enjoy this sneak peek at "Part 1" of the documentary I made while I was a teaching assistant at Florida State University. It shows what goes on backstage and during rehearsals for a play called The Tamer Tamed by John Fletcher, a contemporary of Shakespeare.
Theatrical Bio
An early interest in theatre prompted Mary to attend the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York immediately after high school, and her formal education was enhanced by taking advantage of the opportunity to see many Broadway and Off Broadway shows as well as some interesting experimental theatre and acting showcases. She worked as an actress for a few years for various theatres in Cape Cod Massachussetts and New York and had a few jobs in film and television. Eventually, her love for the theatre drew her to continue her education in theatre production and history, and she worked on a few shows for the Kansas City Repertory Theatre in connection with completing a bachelors degree at the University of Missouri. She expanded her skills to include theatre administration by working for a couple of years at the American Heartland Theatre in Kansas City, reading and evaluating play submissions for the artistic director and handling public relations.
Her love of working with scripts drew her to Los Angeles, where she worked for a books-on-tape company called Dove Audio, abridging novels and great classic masterpieces into audio scripts. Later she freelanced as a script analyst for companies like October Films and Jan de Bont's Blue Tulip Productions. She also worked for several years at Fox Television in their broadcast standards department on such shows as The X-Files, The Simpsons, That Seventies Show, and Millennium.
Eventually she went back to school to earn a masters degree in directing at Kansas State University. Her scholarly research interests include British theatre of the 18th century, especially as female playwrights began to come into the profession, starting with Aphra Behn. She's also interested in how Moliere built on the work of commedia dell'arte and would like to translate and produce a few of his works for contemporary audiences. As a playwright and director, one of her goals is to be able to bring great works of drama and literature to new audiences in fresh and inventive adaptations or stagings. She hopes to contribute to the ongoing evolution of the theatre and also ensure that the often overlooked or undervalued female theatrical voices from previous centuries are passed down to posterity.
